Video based on the dystopian book ORYX & CRAKE
 

VIDEO STORY OUTLINE
 


Post Apocalyptic Dystopian Manchester. Only a few are left behind.
Sunken canals, shells of buildings and selves.
We follow our lead (HIM) navigating this barren landscape alone, exploring what’s left behind.
He’s a rabid dog, wild - emphatic, frustrated.  His motions are bold in the beginning, he smashes, he derives pleasure from destruction and control.

He manages to make his way into a shelter LOCATION ONE catches a glimpse of a girl on television, and starts seeing her everywhere. He begins to follow her, and it descends into him imagining as they’ve always been together.

 

He cuts his foot, and he's even weaker, begins to hallucinate she's with him -  it starts with paranoia that he's being followed and moves onto his dreams of her coming to into reality. She's a strong bold woman who keeps him safe. A subversion of typical adventure romance, she’s leading the way through his hallucination.

 

The video is the course of his downfall as he attempts to pull himself out of his delirium, it’s a whirlwind of pleasure and pain. The video ends with him collapsed in a shop, she lies with him and disappears.

 

I wanted to include loose references to the book. Following smoke to a campfire - the broken watch - the girl - the tv. They travel through this world together, the location being a key character in itself.

 

VIDEO STYLE
 

As much as we're telling the story throughout, I'm always up for working collaboratively, seeing what works and how we can use the locations. With loose briefs of action in spaces, feel free for ideas and movements to flow naturally.

 

 

 

CHARACTER PROFILES


HIM: 

He's a lone-surviver in this world. A pill killed the pleasure-seekers and he's left behind. He spends his days getting around, hunting and gathering. He's fascinated by fire

The video is the course of his downfall. An infection courses through his veins, and pulls at his character and plays tricks on his mind.
RESTLESS - FRUSTRATED - DESTRUCTIVE - ERRATIC - UNPREDICTABLE - MANIACAL - OBSESSIVE
 - PURPOSEFUL

 

HER: 

Strong, Encouraging, enticing & enigmatic. She gives nothing away, but directs our character through the landscape, guiding him through his downfall.


 

 

 

DAY ONE | LOCATION ONE: WASTELAND
 

This is where we introduce HIM. Drone shot of him pacing in a wasteland.  He's foraging and collecting, He's lay on top of an abandoned car. Baseball bat. Movement, smashing, destruction. Day fades to night and he starts a fire. Shot of a dolls house on fire. He stands behind. finds a bike and shots of riding around the lot away into the night.

 

We establish what he's doing and the place where we are. A dog starts to follow him. He finds a bike and rides it back to THE STUDIO

 

 

DAY ONE | LOCATION TWO: THE STUDIO
 

He gets pulled into the world of a chaotic charming man.
Movements collide, boxing, dancing, movement in the space, dripping drunk, disorientated - we see him in a new light. 

Set build of red room with low key red gel lighting, tv, Armchair, lamp. We are somewhere else entirely. He chats incessantly to him whilst the dull hypnotic flicker of the tv entices our character in. Bad feedback, an image of a girl fades in - she stares into his black soul. He can’t stop looking at her. He wakes up collapsed on the armchair. She’s still there, looking at him. She winks, and pulls her into his world. He's now on the TV with his head in her lap, staring blankly at the screen. He wakes as if he's been underwater and he's in a bath tub surrounded by sheets. Cue the next day. 

 

 

DAY TWO | LOCATION THREE: THE  WASTELAND 2 / HIPPODROME
 

Abandoned,overgrown location that she brings him to. She’s always too far away to reach, teasing him to go further. 

 


DAY TWO | LOCATION FOUR: THE SHOP
 


 

The end scene, he’s trying to cure himself, she looks on unassuming. He collapses in the isle, she lies by his side and disappears into nothing.
 

 

 

 

TIMESCALE:
 

The film would be shot over two days. One on location in the studio, with a set build of the room & inside the and the second day, we’d shoot in the HULME HIPPODROME & around manchester.
